Un vent froid de mars circulait alentour de Dallas, comme le docteur entrait dans une petite salle de l’hôpital où Diana Blessing était, encore étourdie de son accouchement.

A cold March wind danced around the dead of night in Dallas as the doctor walked into the small hospital room of Diana Blessing. She was still groggy from surgery.

Son mari, David, tenait sa main pour les dernières nouvelles.

Her husband, David, held her hand as they braced themselves for the latest news.

Cet après-midi du 10 mars 1991, des complications forçaient Diana, enceinte de 24 semaines seulement, d’avoir d’urgence une césarienne pour délivrer leur 1re fille : Dana Lu Blessing

That afternoon of March 10, 1991, complications had forced Diana, only 24-weeks pregnant, to undergo an emergency Cesarean to deliver couple's new daughter, Dana Lu Blessing.

A 12 pouces de longueur et pesant seulement 1 lb 9oz, ils ont deviné qu’elle était prématurée.

At 12 inches long and weighing only one pound nine ounces, they already knew she was perilously premature.

Mais les mots du docteur tombaient comme des bombes.

Still, the doctor's soft words dropped like bombs.

Je ne crois pas qu’elle va vivre a-t-il dit le mieux possible

"I don't think she's going to make it," he said, as kindly as he could.

Il n’y a que 10% de chance qu’elle passe la nuit, même que si par miracle elle survivait, son futur sera très difficile.

"There's only a 10-percent chance she will live through the night, and even then, if by some slim chance she does make it, her future could be a very cruel one"

Abasourdis mais croyants, David et Diana écoutaient ce que le docteur décrivait des problèmes dévastateurs si Dana survivait.

Numb with disbelief, David and Diana listened as the doctor described the devastating problems Dana would likely face if she survived.

Elle ne marchera jamais, ne parlera jamais, sera peut être aveugle et pourrait même avoir des complications cérébrales, mentale, etc…

She would never walk, she would never talk, she would probably be blind, and she would certainly be prone to other catastrophic conditions from cerebral palsy to complete mental retardation, and on and on.

Non, Non dit Diana

"No! No!" was all Diana could say.

Elle et David ainsi que Justin, 5 ans, rêvaient d’avoir une fille et former une famille de 4 personnes.

She and David, with their 5-year-old son Dustin, had long dreamed of the day they would have a daughter to become a family of four.

Les heures passaient ainsi que leur rêve.
Now, within a matter of hours, that dream was slipping away

Après quelques jours, un nouveau problème pour Diana et David : le sous développement du système nerveux de Dana devenait très compliqué, ils ne pouvaient pas la caresser, l’embrasser, la toucher pour lui montrer leur affection, leur amour.

But as those first days passed, a new agony set in for David and Diana. Because Dana's underdeveloped nervous system was essentially 'raw', the lightest kiss or caress only intensified her discomfort, so they couldn't even cradle their tiny baby girl against their chests to offer the strength of their love.

Dana était couchée sous les lumières ultraviolettes avec ses tubes et ses fils. Ils priaient Dieu de surveiller leur petite fille.

All they could do, as Dana struggled alone beneath the ultraviolet light in the tangle of tubes and wires, was to pray that God would stay close to their precious little girl.

Dana devenait un peu plus forte à chaque instant.

There was never a moment when Dana suddenly grew stronger.

Les semaines passèrent, elle grossissait en poids et en force.

But as the weeks went by, she did slowly gain an ounce of weight here and an ounce of strength there.

A deux mois, les parents pouvaient tenir Dana dans leurs bras pour la 1re fois.

At last, when Dana turned two months old. her parents were able to hold her in their arms for the very first time.

Et 2 mois plus tard, les docteurs commencèrent à croire à sa survivance. Dana est partie de l’hôpital pour la maison comme la mère avait prédit.

And two months later, though doctors continued to gently but grimly warn that her chances of surviving, much less living any kind of normal life, were next to zero, Dana went home from the hospital, just as her mother had predicted.

Cinq ans plus tard, Dana vivait comme une petite fille normale, avec beaucoup d’entrain, ayant les yeux gris.

Five years later, when Dana was a petite but feisty young girl with glittering gray eyes and an unquenchable zest for life.

Elle n’avait aucun signe de maladie mentale, de condition physique, sourde ou aveugle. Elle semblait une petite fille normale. Mais ce n’est pas la fin de l’histoire.

She showed no signs whatsoever of any mental or physical impairment. Simply, she was everything a little girl can be and more. But that happy ending is far from the end of her story.


Un certain après-midi, l’été de 1996, près de leur maison dans la ville de Irving au Texas, Dana était assise sur sa mère regardant la partie de balle de son frère Dustin.

One blistering afternoon in the summer of 1996 near her home in Irving, Texas, Dana was sitting in her mother's lap in the bleachers of a local ball park where her brother Dustin's baseball team was practicing.

Comme toujours, Dana parlait continuellement à sa mère et aux adultes assis quand elle sentit un silence. Entourant ses bras autour de sa mère, elle dit: Sens-tu cela?

As always, Dana was chattering nonstop with her mother and several other adults sitting nearby when she suddenly fell silent. Hugging her arms across her chest, little Dana asked, "Do you smell that?"


Sentant l’air et reconnaissant un orage s’approcher, Diana lui dit: Oui, je sens la pluie.

Smelling the air and detecting the approach of a thunderstorm, Diana replied, "Yes, it smells like rain."

Dana ferma ses yeux et redemanda: Sens-tu cela?

Dana closed her eyes and again asked, "Do you smell that?"

Encore une fois, sa mère lui dit: Oui, je crois qu’il va pleuvoir.

Once again, her mother replied, "Yes, I think we're about to get wet. It smells like rain."

Dana secoua sa tête, tapant les épaules de sa mère avec ses petites mains et lui dit: Non, cela sent comme Lui.

Still caught in the moment, Dana shook her head, patted her thin shoulders with her small hands and loudly announced,
"No, it smells like Him.


“Cela sent comme Dieu quand tu poses ta tête sur sa poitrine”

“It smells like God when you lay your head on His chest."


Diana pleurait et Dana sauta pour aller jouer avec les autres enfants.

Tears blurred Diana's eyes as Dana happily hopped down to play with the other children.

Avant que la pluie commence, les mots de sa fille confirmaient ce que Diana et les autres membres de la famille Blessing avaient espérés dans leur coeur.

Before the rains came, her daughter's words confirmed what Diana and all the members of the extended Blessing family had known, at least in their hearts, all along.

Pendant de longues journées et nuits des premiers mois de sa vie, quand ils ne pouvaient pas la toucher, Dieu tenait Dana contre lui et c’est cette senteur qu’elle reconnaissait.

During those long days and nights of her first two months of her life, when her nerves were too sensitive for them to touch her, God was holding Dana on His chest and it is His loving scent that she remembers so well.

"Lord please, take care of the person who is reading this message, their family and their special friends. They deserve it and I love them very much" The love of God is like the ocean, you can see its beginning, but not its end.
